Fasting

Fasting is an act of willingly abstaining from some or all food or drink (or both) for a certain period of time. Some religious fasting may also include abstinence from sexual activity.

Fasting means cleansing. To those who practice it, and to those who propagate it to all mankind as the cure to all ills and as the salvation from all sins.

Cleansing of the body. Cleansing of the soul. As a nutritionist, I can only comment on the former.

TYPES OF FASTS

Fasting can be total or partial. It may begin from abstinence from one particular food to total exclusion of all food and even water.

Different fasts may follow one or more of the following restrictions:

·         Abstaining from meat or all non-vegetarian foods

·        Exclusion of cereals such as rice and chapatti, or any other staple foods

·         Reducing total food intake to only one full meal per day

Fad Diets – By Gauri Murthy

‘Fad’ means a craze, a trend, a whim. That’s exactly what fad diets are: Crazy diets. Started by unscrupulous nutritionists & dietitians who just want to cash in on the weight loss band wagon.

Fad diets are mostly imbalanced in their nutritional approach. They may lack required energy, protein and vital vitamins and minerals that are essential for health, and run a high risk of leading to nutritional deficiencies. They are not only unhealthy, but also counter-productive to our final goal: an ideal body.

It may come as a surprise to many but sheer weight loss is not going to give any fat person the body he or she dreams about. Its only when the weight loss is selectively only in terms of body fat that the person will be happy with his or her body. Fat loss is going to give you the athletic toned body you want…NOT INDISCRIMINATE WEIGHT LOSS that does not distinguish between fat loss & muscle loss.

Detox Diet – By Gauri Murthy

‘Detox’ (short for detoxification) is a welcome word in today’s day of battling stress, pollution and contamination. A ‘Detox’ diet is looked at like a breath of pure air, cleansing our bodies and giving us new life. It claims to aid in weight loss, and improve health, digestion, resistance to disease and mental state.

Wish that was true, but that’s the exact opposite of what it does!

Detox diets attempt to achieve detoxification and rejuvenation by removal of toxins or other contaminants by drastically changing the daily diet.

Their argument is usually based on a combination of:

1. ‘Resting’ the body’s digestive and metabolic systems: through intake of mainly fruits and vegetables

2. ‘Cleansing’ the systems: through high intake of water and fluids such as vegetable and fruit juices

Some ‘detox’ protocols allow intake of selected cereals and pulses, whereas others are highly restrictive: resembling a ‘fast’ with mainly fruits, vegetables and water. Intake of good quality fats such as olive oil may be advised by some protocols, but neglected by others.

Fruits, vegetables and water. How can the diet be unhealthy? Because often that’s all it has.

It excludes key food groups and therefore essential nutrients:

· First-class protein from milk products, lean meats and fish

· Essential fatty acids such as omega-3 from good quality fats: e.g. fish

Thermogenic Food – Gauri Murthy

Many people would be surprised by the fact that you can actually burn fat by eating! However before I tell you how you can actually eat more yet still burn more fat than someone who eats less we have to take a closer look at how various foods have positive or negative energy values.

As you should know food is divided into 3 basic categories:
Proteins
Carbohydrates
Fats

The carbohydrates are divided into 3 groups:
Simple carbs – sugars, glucose, lactose, dextrose
Complex starches – rice, bread, pasta, grains, potatoes
Fibrous carbs – vegetables – broccoli, cabbage, cauli, green beans etc.

Understanding Thermogenic values:
The thermogenic value of a food or food group is determined by the energy that your body uses to digest the food and the metabolic responses associated with those foods. In general the harder the food is to digest the higher the thermogenic value of that food.
The food requires a great deal more energy to break it down or digest it so the overall calorie and energy value of that particular food is “negative” .
A low thermogenic value food is digested extremely quickly and the sugar from the food enters the blood stream at a fast rate and can have a higher affinity to store as fat.
